University of Nevada Las Vegas Conducts Assessment of RFS for Long Term Ecological Research of Piñon-Juniper Forests May 23-24, 2025

Dr. Drew Peltier a tree physiologist at the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Life Sciences visited RFS to assess the possibility of setting up a long term ecological research site. Dr. Peltier studies the long term effects of droughts on piñon-juniper forests in the southwest, and the mechanisms by which those species build in resiliency against changes in climate. Dr. Peltier took over a dozen tree cores from piñons, Utah junipers, and Rocky Mountain junipers at various sites around RFS, and discussed the possibility and requirements for setting up continuous weather data collection and tree growth monitoring on site. We look forward to working with Dr. Peltier and UNLV in the future!

He also demonstrated tree coring technique:

Luckily for the students attending the NMSU Capstone Field Course in Geology, they got to witness Dr. Peltier coring a tree, and Xtopher Trujillo even got to try his hand at it. The Perot Museum scientists were also jumped in on the scientific cross-pollination!!
