OUR RESEARCH PROGRAM

Professional Research

Professional research at the Reynolds Field Station is conducted as interdependent collaborations between multiple disciplines and institutions. Our current programs involve graduate students and professional staff from universities and museums. We anticipate continuing program expansion each year, as field exploration and research exposes more “Big Science Questions” each season.

OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Education and Outreach

Our education and outreach programs invite learners of all ages to immerse themselves in the wonderment of the natural world and the many sciences to explore at the Reynolds Field Station. We are developing programs with our partner institutions for grades K-12, undergraduate university students, citizen scientists, families and senior citizens, to inspire science learning.

Who We Are

Our Mission

To provide access to a science research and field station in an extraordinary, under-studied natural history environment for inter- and multi-disciplinary exploration, research and learning. The Reynolds Field Station exists to enhance the scientific understanding of current and future generations of researchers, students, educators, institutions and the public.

Our Vision

A permanent world-class facility where a collegial cohort of constituents educates and conducts research in interdependent collaborations that leverage the strengths of multiple disciplines.

We foresee new generations of learners gaining experience in and appreciation of the value of bridging expertise from different disciplines and institutions.

Our Core Values

Create opportunities that promote life-long learning, for learners from K-12 to senior citizens, in natural world immersions.

Create focused outreach science learning opportunities for indigenous, under-served and local communities.

Make a positive impact on science enrollments and stimulate interest in field science methods, by contributing new educational paradigms and unique experiences in geology and other sciences.

What Makes Reynolds Field Station Unique

The Reynolds Field Station is a combination of an accessible wonderland of natural science, and a paradigm-shifting approach to field science research and education.

A Unique Setting

  • The pristine, uncut old growth forest and rugged topography with its diverse ecology and wildlife populations has never been harvested, mapped or researched
  • The land is a spectacular exposure of Cretaceous rock deposits 84-88 million years old, with abundant fossils on the surface throughout the property
  • Very little has been published about the geology and paleontology of this area, which is already producing new finds, and generating topics for thesis research and publication opportunities
  • Ancient cultural artifacts found on the property indicate Indigenous hunting and habitation during Paleo to Archaic Cultures / Early Holocene to Neoglacial periods
  • An unparalleled dark sky, undiminished by man-made light provides world-class observational astronomy viewing conditions

A Unique Approach

  • We champion multi- and inter-disciplinary research and learning. Our collaborative, interdependent field exploration programs generate innovative outcomes arising from the intersection of disparate disciplines
  • We facilitate a multi-institutional research approach that combines university and museum researchers and expertise to tackle far-reaching regional problems we call Big Science Questions
  • We are committed to creating life-long learning opportunities for all ages
  • We put special focus on developing respectful, integrative programs that enrich learning for Indigenous and underserved communities

RFS Testimonials

“The Reynolds Field Station is situated in an ideal landscape to provide experiential learning for students and lifelong learners in a variety of scientific disciplines including geology, paleontology, biology, and ecology. The Station provides a unique and exciting opportunity for the Perot Museum’s paleontology research program, offering the possibility to make new discoveries and scientific contributions to our understanding of ancient Life and ecosystems in an underrepresented slice of North American prehistory.”

Dr. Dori Contreras

Curator of Paleobotany, Perot Museum of Nature and Science

“Indigenous STEM has the potential to flourish at the Reynolds Field Station because of their commitment to respecting Indigenous data sovereignty principles and their openness to using inclusive pedagogies for diverse learners.”

Dr. Darryl Reano

Assistant Professor, ASU

“Geoscience education is fundamentally field-based. The Reynolds Field Station, through programming and infrastructure, provides an avenue for university geosciences students, K-12 students, and teachers to experience world-class geology in a pristine setting. Inspiration by the complexity and beauty of nature is inevitable!”
